Easy to use mobile phones: How we test

Which? mobile phone testing

In the regular Which? mobile phone testing we put each handset through a battery of laboratory tests, examining everything from reception levels to the shutter delay on the digital camera (see our conventional mobile phone reviews for details).

User tests: older mobile phone users

Uncovering what older people think of the mobile phones requires a different approach. As well as recording the phone handsets’ technical data, where relevant, we also assembled a panel of older users and set them a series of tasks. We then asked them about their experiences with the easy-to-use mobile phones.

This trial was performed by 11 older people, with an average age of 63. All wear glasses, while three have hearing aids. None are experienced mobile phone users.

Ease of use

The panellists were asked to perform 12 different tasks with the easy-to-use mobile phones, ranging from inserting the Sim card to editing telephone book contact details. They were also asked to give overall ratings for the readability of the buttons and display, the ease of handling of the buttons, and the sound quality.
