Family tree software: How to buy

Increasingly, genealogy software and websites help you to research as well as organise your family tree. Most programs now include access to web-based research tools such as Birth, Marriage and Death (BMD) records and online censuses. You’ll often find that there are subscriptions or pay-as-you go vouchers included, too.

Software packages

Many packages come bundled with added subscriptions and credits to research websites. Generally-speaking, subscription deals are better for the enthusiast as you’ll get access to online records for a fixed term. Trial subscriptions are a great way to test out websites but remember to cancel before your trial period ends or you may be charged when it expires.

Genealogy websites

Websites place a greater emphasis on research than the software programs. Typically, it’s free to register and create a family tree on the site, but you’ll need to pay for a subscription or buy pay-as-you go credits before you can access official records online.

Pay-as-you-go

Pay-as-you-go options are great for accessing the odd record (which you can print and save).

Subscriptions

Subscriptions offer better value for experienced genealogists or those planning to do a lot of research. You may find that a site offers tiered levels of subscription with the pricier subscriptions offering unlimited access to all records.
