Portable DVD player reviews: How to buy
Screen size
Large screens are preferable, as long as the image quality's up to it
Not all portable DVDs are created equal and screen size is one area where there are big differences.
In many ways a larger screen is preferable, but if the player isn't up to it then a larger screen can just highlight picture quality deficiencies. Ask for a demo in the shop before you buy.
Portability
The physical size and weight of players can vary considerably, and for a portable device this is important. Check the player isn't too big for whatever bag or carrier you intend to carry it in.
Remote control
It's crucial that your remote is easy to use
All players have control buttons on the console themselves, but most also come with mini remote controls too.
If you get the chance, check they're not too fiddly to use and that their range and operating angle aren't too limited for whatever purpose you want to use them for. We have tested remote controls for functionality.
Outputs and inputs
Most players can connect to a conventional TV set, so you can view films on a big screen if you wish. But if you're likely to want to watch footage from a camcorder or MP4 player, make sure the player has the compatible inputs to enable you to do this. Most do.
