Shredders: How we test
Testing to destruction
We measure how finely each model shreds paper
Destroying paper is the main job of a shredder, so we measure how finely each model chops up a sheet of A4 and then attempt to reconstruct it - as a thief might.
As there are many sensitive documents that you should destroy, we focus on how many sheets each machine can handle at once and how quickly it shreds them.
We also jam each machine by overloading it and see how easy it is to free-up again.
In addition, we also feed each model with other material, including cardboard, photos, envelopes, laminated sheets, credit cards, paper clips and staples - to see how well the shredders cope with these and whether jams occur.
The 1,000 sheet test
Another test in progress
To see how durable the shredders are, we quickly feed 1,000 sheets in - 50 at a time with 15 minutes cooling time in between. We look out for overheating and jams.
We also work out how easy it is to use each model, such as loading paper, clearing jams and emptying the bin as well as the clarity of the instructions.
We also check each model for safety issues. Our experts check that the products are stable and won't topple over when in use. They also ensure that it is not possible to touch the moving parts and that all the products are safe electrically.
