Smart security-system reviews you can trust

Our hands-on reviews are based on the combined experience of Which? researchers and a security expert with 30 years’ experience with the Metropolitan Police. Smart home-security systems are generally designed to be self-installed, so our researchers assessed how easy each kit is to set up and whether it's straightforward to use.

Our security expert has also taken an in-depth look at each system, giving a view on whether it will deter burglars and keep your home protected. We’ve found a few key things that separate the good smart home-security systems from the mediocre:

  • Easy to install. Some systems will leave you scratching your head thanks to confusing instructions, and others don’t provide good enough advice on where to place individual components, making them a waste of space and money. Our experts check how easy each system is to use and whether it comes with functional instructions.
  • User-friendly app. The app associated with the smart security systems is your way of keeping an eye on your home when you’re not there. A good app makes it easy to control your system and ensures you’ll be alerted if an intruder enters your home. Poor apps send confusing error messages or freeze, leaving you frustrated and unable to use your smart security system properly.
  • Good combination of gadgets. Each smart home security system comes with a different set of gadgets, so we check whether those included will deter burglars and how well they monitor your home. The most effective systems will include external sirens or stickers that let burglars know yours is a property best left alone.
