What payment methods are available?

Your energy company will give you a choice of the following payment methods:

Direct debit: a regular payment taken by your energy supplier from your bank account. Your energy supplier will take equal instalments of your annual spend each month.

Quarterly payments: payment by cash, cheque or debit/credit card, either on the telephone or over the internet each quarter on receipt of your energy bill.

Prepayment: purchasing prepaid credit. This is available only to those with prepayment electricity and gas meters.

Standing order: a pre-specified regular payment sent directly from your bank account based on your average regular usage.

Variable quarterly direct debit: a quarterly payment taken from your bank account. The amount taken depends on the amount of energy used in the previous quarter.

For more detailed explanation of each payment method, see our guide to energy bill payment methods.
