Backup and protect
Before you start, back up your files (see our review for easy-to-use Best Buy backup software).
Drives should also come with a boot disk, which will allow you to start up your computer if anything goes wrong.
Now, check the instructions that came with your drive to see if you need to run the accompanying installation software at this stage.
Shut down Windows and unplug your computer from the mains outlet. Remove the case (you will need a screwdriver).
2Protect your PC
Your PC's components are sensitive to static so it's important that you make sure that you earth yourself before you start rummaging around inside it.
We recommend that you wear an anti-static wristband (circled) with a small cable; attach the crocodile clip at the end of the cable to the metal casing of your PC.
