Here are a few basics to introduce you to Windows Vista.
Start Bar
The Start menu has changed since Windows XP. It's now split into two columns.
As a general rule, the white column on the left shows programs and the black column on the right shows system and navigation tools.
Click All Programs to see a full list of applications.
Instant search
The Instant Search box is at the bottom of the Start menu.
Enter the name of a file or program in here and the white column of the Start menu will display results instantly as you type.
It's the quickest and easiest way to find anything on your PC.
Vista gadgets
Gadgets are completely new to Windows Vista.
These little utilities can provide instant access from your desktop to useful things like a clock or calculator as well as fun stuff like a mini-slideshow of your photos.
Click on Windows Sidebar in your taskbar to access gadgets.

Power buttons
You can access power options through the Start icon.
You can turn off your computer by clicking on the Stand-by button or lock your PC by clicking the padlock icon.
Clicking the small right-pointing arrow gives you more shut down, restart and log off options.
Unwelcome center?
When you start Vista you'll be presented with the Welcome Center.
This is a utility that provides you with instant access to information about your computer.
It also gives access to shortcuts to common tasks such as personalising Windows' appearance or adding new user accounts.
It's quite useful when you start using Vista but can be turned off if needs be by unchecking the box in the bottom left-hand corner.
Microsoft released a Beta version of Windows 7, the operating system that will replace Windows Vista, in January 2009, though it isn't expected to be rolled out until late 2009. Read the Which? first look review of Windows 7 here.
