We’ve never awarded an own-brand digital radio a Which? Best Buy rating. However, when it comes to occasional use, or listening for very short periods, our experts think supermarket own-brand digital radios can be quite good for those on a tight budget.
Fans of classical music should be more wary than those who listen to lots of speech and pop music broadcasts. This is because complex classical music can sound awful on cheaper digital radios with poor-quality speakers

Which supermarket digital radio brands should I look for?
It’s difficult to give a definitive answer to this question, as there are few digital radios available from each supermarket brand, so we don't have much data to go on.
Technika is a Tesco own brand. We've tested a couple of its digital radios and have found that they fare reasonably well. However, ease of use sometimes seems to be a problem.
Asda produces a range of digital radios under its own brand name
The Asda chain also has several digital radios on the market, costing as little as £24 for a clock radio.
We've only tested one digital radio from Asda and we weren't hugely impressed – see our digital radio reviews to read the full test results. Having said this, the price is low so that many people will think it's a risk worth taking.
Is there a branded alternative?
If you don't want to buy a supermarket own brand, look out for branded digital radios costing less than £50. There are a couple of digital radios on the market from Pure at this price, and this number looks likely to increase.
The government has said that before a digital switchover for radio can take place, there needs to be a good range of digital radios on the market costing less than £50, so we expect competition in this price bracket to increase.
