I have been looking for a bedside radio that gives me good DAB and FM reception (my local BBC station only broadcasts on the latter). I started out on my quest by trying quite expensive (£100+) radios but either Dab reception was good and FM poor or vice versa. On seeing this radio on offer I decided to give it a try and lo and behold perfect reception on both.Agreed, the specification is pared to the bone but as a no frills bedside radio it is tops - and the sound isn't that bad.

Sound is fairly poor, as stated in the review. I think the reason it doesn't have an earphone socket is due to the large amount of bass boost applied in an attempt to make the small speaker sound better in the boxy plastic environment. This would sound horrible through a set of good 'phones.Reception isn't bad on both FM and DAB. But my main gripe wh this set is the fact that you have to buy the rechargeable battery pack (chargepak )as a £20 extra. Ordinary AA cells don't fit. And it is pretty easy to see why - the current drain is huge for such a tiny set. Even the chargepack only lasts for about half the claimed 20 hrs. Most annoyingly, this discharges within the set even when it is switched off - over two weeks or so it will go completely flat. Maybe Which should test for this in all battery DAB radios? Heaven knows why it needs to do this.The battery also takes about 12 hours to charge. All in all, it is not much of a portable set as it is tied to the mains most of the time. My little old FM tranny a Which best buy from 1970 - uses less than 1/10 of the power, doesn't make its (cheap AA alkaline or rechargeable) batteries go flat when not in use and sounds much better!
