Roberts Stream 202 - WM202 review

The portable Roberts Stream 202 - WM202 is a DAB and internet radio - it can also be used to stream music from your PC via wi-fi. It's user-friendly with fairly large screen and easily identifiable controls, but when it comes to sound quality, can this Roberts DAB radio deliver the goods?

I phoned Roberts re something I did not quite understand in the manual - was made to feel I was stupid having to ask for help.Mains unit seems cheap and nasty. The 2 wire shorted where they leave the unit, naturally when warranty had expired. The set and mains unit have only light domestic use and had not been abused. Not impressed by Roberts - dont think they merit premium prices. Not a set to be run on battery power - they dont last long. No warning when they get low - the set just dies. Cant recharge them in the set - surely not outwith Roberts ability to allow charging in situ via the mains unit. Pros: Cons:

At night the display is so bright I could almost read a book. The second aspect was the portability; I like to carry my news to the bathroom in the morning. Firstly it seemed to lose settings and the battery life was appalling - on HUGE 'D' size batteries. Finally the sound; I recognise the 'Roberts' sound but this radio has almost nil higher frequency output and a rather too rounded overall sound. It was sent back to Roberts for repair. As they could find nothing wrong with it, they furnished me with a brand new unit. I believe they sent me the latest incarnation of this model because this one now has a different display layout and a podcast option. I had problems with this form day one with the radio losing wifi connection and not being able to reconnect someitme for upto 3 hours. I brought this unit back to the retailer for a full refund and I'm now in the market for a different brand. Roberts: what a let down Pros: Cons:

Internet radio sound quality and ease of use also excellent. Very easy to set up. Slightly irritating that when listening to podcasts which are interuppted the programme returns to the beginning but am so delighted I can listen to radio programmes when I choose to it is not an issue. I own two Pure radios in wooden casings and the warmth and tonal response from those is far superior. The casing for the Roberts is lightweight plastic which probably contributes to the problem.Ultimately, for the kitchen I suppose it doesn't matter but for the price, it's disappointing. Also disappointed that the Which review says on audio 'it delivers the goods'; it's the last time I'll rely on their ears before buying. Pros: Cons:

Sound is excellent. I'm also really impressed at the range of radio stations that can be accessesed - if it's on the internet then you can listen to it. Very easy to set up either on the radio itself or through a linked website. The only reason I've not given this full marks is that I've just not been able to get music streaming from my computer. This should be possible but it's just not working whatever I do (that may be me though).Thoroughly recommend! Pros: Cons:

Comparing the two and the Roberts wins on ease of use and sound quality. Internet radio is great as we cannot get DAB and I am a keen Radio 5 Live listener. The only annoyance I've had is with the display - its either too bright or the backlight is turned off making it difficult to see what it says. In the settings you can adjust the brightness and change it between stand-by and on so its flexible but I use it in the bedroom to wake up by in the mornings and even on the dimmest on setting the display lights up the room. I've had to turn it off which is a pain. Otherwise - good buy. Pros: Cons:

My listening has really improved since I bought a Roberts WM-202 radio though. Reception and sound quality via wifi and the internet is good and there is huge selection of radio stations. The only difficulty I had when setting up was that the radio had to be connected by ethernet cable to the router before I could register the Frontier radio station access code. There are 15 radio presets but they are pre-allocated to internet, FM and DAB, so in my case I have only 5 that are really useful. You can set up additional favourite stations via the internet which can be accessed through the screen on the radio though. Pros: Cons:

It is pretty easy to set-up provided you know your wi-fi passwords etc. Overall we are very pleased with it especially for listening to internet and FM radio. Digital radio reception is pretty poor in our house even though the digital radio postcode checker said we were 'very likely to receive' dozens of stations. You'd be wise to borrow a friends digital radio to check reception if this is important to you.Playing podcasts including BBC i-player is very easy although it can be frustrating that there is no fast forward, replay or pause facility especially if the connection drops out as you will be reconnected to the beginning of the podcast. It's easy to play music from our computers but oddly our XP computer will only play via the folders method and our Vista laptop will only play via the media player method (we put this down to the wonder of MIcrosoft!).We are accustomed to radio batteries lasting the best part of a year in our 1970's B&O portable so battery life is a shock - we use rechargeables.
