Security software: Choosing the best antivirus software Free antivirus software vs security suites
Security software is available in two main formats – either as individual utilities or as an all-in-one security ‘suite’ that contains all the components you need in a single, unified package. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches.
Keep your PC safe with our essential security tips
Security suites
Pros
• Provides a comprehensive all-round solution
• All the components will be automatically updated at the same time.
• All your tools are available from the same interface
• Some security suites come with multi-user licences so you can install the same protection on two or more computers in your home.
• Many security suites include useful extras, such as network management or backup and recovery tools that can help you restore your PC in the event of a disaster.
• Paid-for suites often provide better customer and technical support
Cons
• Security suites can be expensive – usually around £30-£50 and you’ll also need to pay ongoing costs (usually in the form of an annual subscription) to carry on receiving updates after the initial period of protection is over (usually a year).
• You may not always need all the options a security suite provides and, therefore, you may be doubling up in some areas or paying for protection you won’t use.
• Some security suites have been known to take up a lot of system resources, potentially slowing down your computer’s operation.
Free or individual security programs
Pros
• You are free to pick and choose only the tools you need. If you already use Windows' built-in firewall and anti-spyware tools, for example, and you’re already protected by a spam filter via your email program, then you may only need to install an anti-virus program rather than pay for and install a whole suite.
• Many individual components are available for free. In fact it’s possible to completely protect your computer with separate free anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam and firewall programs.
Cons
• You’ll effectively need to build your own software suite – the responsibility rests with you to make all areas of your PC safe.
• Separate programs mean that there are more things to keep up to date.
• Free programs tend to have only basic technical support options, such as an online FAQ or discussion board.
