How we test DVD burners

Burners were measured on how fast they burned different types of data

To test the DVD drives, we measured how fast they burned different types of data, such as video footage or lots of data files, on to rewriteable discs (DVD-RW or DVD+RW) and write-once discs (DVD-R and DVD+R).

In this batch of testing we got through some 250 discs.

Ease of use

We also assessed how easy it was to set up and use the device, and what useful features and connections it had, for example Firewire, or whether the drive could be powered by a USB connection.

And the software doesn’t escape our attention either – the software included with the burners was put through the same tests as the paid-for software.

We assessed its ease of use and capability by looking at all aspects of its performance and testing it with a series of real-world scenarios, such as backing up data, or transferring video footage.
