Printers: Save money on printing Don’t splash your cash

Stack of printing materials

You can spend £137 to £565 on ink over three years

Using your printer costs you money. Every time you click the ‘Print’ button your stock of ink and paper goes down. And buying replacements can be very expensive. To help you spend less, we’ve put together eight sure-fire tips that will make your ink and paper – and money – go that little bit further.

Before you follow these tips, bear in mind that if what’s shown on your screen varies slightly from our steps, it’s because different manufacturers provide different software with their printers.

However, you'll be able to follow our tips with the vast majority of printers, so if you don’t see a particular tick box at first, explore by clicking any Properties, Preferences or Option buttons you see onscreen.

Our steps show you how to save on printing in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, but they can also be applied to lots of other programs as well. Bookmark this page, as no matter what software you’re using, you’ll be able to follow the steps every time you want to save money by cutting down on the amount of ink and paper you waste.
