CES 2011: Tablets at CES 2011 Asus Eee Slate
If you want a tablet with the power of an ordinary laptop, Asus’ newly announced Eee Slate EP121 could be for you. With an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of Ram, the Eee Slate isn’t just ‘a big mobile phone’ - it’s a proper PC.
Unsurprisingly it runs Windows 7, and that Intel Core i5 processor burns away at 2.53GHz. With an ample 4GB of Ram and a super-fast 64GB SSD in support, the Eee Slate should deliver performance way in excess of typical tablets.
This will make it bigger and heavier, though. Asus was coy about specifics here, but we do know it has a 12.1-inch touchscreen with a 1,280 x 800 resolution. This makes it quite large, and the fast processor means it has vents and fans to keep it cool.

High quality touchscreen
As for the display, Asus made a point of mentioning the IPS LCD panel technology used. This is the same tech as found in the iPad and high-end PC monitors and TVs, and should ensure very wide viewing angles and bright, faithful colours.
The touchscreen element of screen can be used with your finger, or with a provided stylus for more precise control. The latter will come in handy for using Windows’ handwriting recognition, which you’ll need as the Slate has no physical keyboard and - in our experience at least - the on-screen keyboard in Windows can be difficult to use practically.

Good connectivity
Naturally there’s plenty of connectivity on offer. USB ports and a memory card slot are included, as is a mini-HDMI output for connecting to an external display. 1080p video playback is no problem at all, as you’d expect given this is essentially a laptop sans the keyboard.
