Apple iPad Apple iPad vs Amazon Kindle video

Apple iPad

Many comparisons have been made between the Apple iPad and the Amazon Kindle. Our friends at Consumer Reports in the US have compiled a video exploring the pros and cons of each model when used as ebook readers.

Due to its more powerful processor, the iPad can turn pages more quickly and, as the screen is larger, fewer page turns are required.

The iPad has a colour display, which makes book covers and images more enjoyable to view. It's also touchscreen-operable, which has its advantages - but which also means that the screen becomes smothered in fingerprints.

The Kindle uses e-ink technology, meaning that it can't be read in the dark like the iPad can, but this reduces the effects of eyestrain, which can be a big issue when looking at the screen for prolonged periods of time.

iBook versus Kindle store

The Kindle provides more titles through Amazon than the iPad does through the Apple iBook store, although there are a number of apps downloadable to the iPad which open up a number of other book titles.

The iPad's screen is very reflective and therefore can be difficult to read in the dark, while the Kindle's screen works well even in direct sunlight.

The battery life on the Kindle is far superior to that on the iPad, which is claimed to provide around ten hours of power; this compares with the week's worth of use you can get from the Kindle between charges.

Apple iPad wins on versatility

The Amazon Kindle is lighter and more portable than the iPad, and it's also considerably cheaper.

The iPad, however, is a very versatile machine and can be used for gaming, web browsing, emailing, viewing videos and much more. The Kindle, on the other hand, is far more limited in functionality.

We'll be lab-testing the Kindle against other ebook readers soon, and we'll also be pitching it against netbooks and portable gaming devices.
