Before the new version of the Apple operating system was available, iPhone, iPad and iPod users were required to email documents to computers or compatible printers in order to print them off. You can see a demonstration of this procedure in our eprinter guide.

ePrinters and iOS limitations

To use the new AirPrint feature on the iPad, iPhone or iPod you'll need a compatible printer. In the demonstration above we used the HP e-all-in-one printer, the HP Envy 100 which we've tested - see our printer reviews to find out how it performed in our tests.

The new Apple operating system isn't available on the first generation iPod Touch devices or models of the original, 2007 iPhone. You can find out more about the other features available with Apple iOS 4.2 on our mobile phone website.
