How Which? tests printers

Getting to grips with a printer is about more than checking for print quality, and at Which? we put every printer reviewed through a rigorous process over a period of weeks to find the best quality, quickest and cheapest to run printers.

Our panel of experts assesses the print quality of a range of documents and images, including black and white text documents, colour photos, spreadsheets and desktop publishing work.

We also time each printer's output to see whether the manufacturers' speed claims match reality, and if there are additional features, such as a scanner and copier. We check the quality and speed of these too.

Ease of use is rated, and just as importantly, we examine the cost of printing. Our unique ink cost tests go further than standard tests, capturing the cost of the ink some printers use to clean themselves when you leave time between print jobs. This extra ink use over time can more than quadruple your printing costs and, with ink priced higher per ml than vintage champagne, ongoing costs can quickly mount up with the more expensive brands. This guide should help you narrow down your search for a great, cheap printer.
