Broadband: Compare features & prices Be Value review Back to Results

Like its parent-company O2, BE is currently subject to a takeover bid by Sky. BE doesn't offer combined phoneline and broadband, let alone TV packages - it simply offers broadband on its own. But how do BE broadband customers rate it for phone support and connection reliability?

Its OK nothing special
Was with BE for about 2 years. Broadband speeds in my area are generally 2 to 6 according to BE. I got closer to 2 (BE kept saying 2.7) its only when I installed a BT Iplate did the speed get as high as 3. I never did get 6. I think in the period I was with them there were less than 5 times when the service was not available. I class this as good longest outage was less than 4 hours. It's also unlimited though which is very good. They dont seem to throttle either. Telephone support is OK but I am pretty certain that its non UK based as the English whilst OK tends to be a bit broken. One other thing that happened regularly was that the Thomson router would disconnect after 6 hours. I never pursued this with BE so unsure whether this was normal or not. Unfortunately they still don't do Fibre broadband and when I questioned this they dropped the price of the standard broadband substantially. I still left, they were very good and quick at supplying a MAC code although I had to send back my router otherwise they would charge £35. Luckily it was freepost.ProsReliable serviceGood response to outagesReasonable valueConsAs they are not that cheap I expected moreSupplied Router not that greatNon UK call centre's but at least they employ people that can mostly understand youNo Fibre (not in 2012)PS I would really give them 3.5 stars but which don't do that so I cant.

incompatible with talk talk
It appears that BE can't set up broadband if you are with talk talk. We currently have both phone and broadband with talk talk but are moving house in 2 weeks and wanted to move everything to BE. BE can't move you and keep your existing number so advised us that if we wanted to keep our number we should move our phone to the post office. As there's no tie in on post office phone we can then move the phone to BE after a month. Actually this has worked out cheaper as postoffice have a free installation deal at the moment (the new house doesn't have an active phone line). For switching the broadband BE told us that they couldn't switch us while we still have our phone line with talk talk. as soon as we have our phone line with postoffice they can move our broadband. In reply to shlink - at present when I put in our number i get the same message 'service temporarily unavailable' - i think this is about talktalk being incompatible with BE. When I put in my parents number - who are with BT- it gives me the speed they can expect and allows me to proceed with the order.

Not a promising start
Considering switching to BE on the strength of Which's review. Tried to check my landline speed from the BE website and got 'service temporarily unavailable'. I then tried to check my internet connection speed, again from the BE website, and repeatedly got 'an error occurred, unable to connect to server, try again'. I think I'll stick with Eclipse.

Happy customer!
While BT took over a month to activate my phone line (remotely while I was off work to wait around at home), BE sent the modem within a few days and had me set up within a week. There was clear and regular communication by text message and e-mail throughout the process. I got a text message in France to tell me it was ready on the date promised. My connection speed is close to the promised 12 meg and so far hasn't wavered. With a Mac, all I had to do to set it up is type in the password at the bottom of the modem. If only everything went so well.

Maxed Out
I have been with BE for over a year and I have only had one outage of a few hours. Overall the service is great and good value. The support service is very good - BUT I am still thinking about leaving. With BE support we have tuned the system to get the max out of the line in my location (London suburbs) - and with three heavy users in the family I need more speed - which probably means going to fibre with BT (the only supplier in the area. That said, I would recomend BE for 90% of users.

I have recently moved to BE (value package)from Tiscali/Talktalk. I am receiving a cheaper, faster service and more importantly (in my view), a superior level of customer service. My line was activated and migrated within a week; I had cause to request a change to the modem/router delivery date I was offered and this was implemented smoothly and correctly. I have raised numerous questions about my new service via online support and telephone. All such requests were dealt with promptly and without fault. Telephones are always answered promptly and I have never felt that someone was reading a script on the other end.The service was very easy to set up (just a question of plugging in a router). BE has so far proven to be a breath of fresh air compared to my previous ISP. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Support
Generally you can only really judge a company when things go wrong. My line speed was only 1.5Mb when connected and should have been near 6Mb. Communication via logging tickets on line was good and they called me several times with updates as to what they would do to resolve. 2 visits from Openreach later (BE organised) it was fixed so I have to say really pleased. And all this for £6.75 per month with the offer. The only gripe I have is the wireless router they sent (Thomson), its not a patch on the Netgear kit and plays havoc with my network(IMHO). Have swapped out for Netgear and all works fine.

Very good....but I may still be leaving them!
Left AOL for BE almost 1 yr ago. Now getting faster speeds (4M) and a much more reliable service. Slightly resent having to pay extra for email addresses, but still works out much cheaper than I was paying before. But o2 and BE share the same LLU network. And, for customers with an o2 mobile, their broadband costs around half that of BE. So I've now ordered an o2 SIM card to check how good its reception is in these parts. If I like it, then I'm likely to switch....

I have never had any problems with this service in 18 months. The speed on LLU is better than I was getting with Zen on non LLU line. (4M against 2M). I have just used on-line support, but could not fault it. The router works very well, but the user interface is limiting in that you need to go to command line functions to do things such as updating the firmware. The only drawback is you do not get e-mail included in the basic package price.
