Broadband: Compare features & prices BT Total Broadband Option 1 review Back to Results

BT is the biggest, and best-known, name in UK telecoms - surely this would make it a dab hand at providing home broadband? We surveyed Which? members to see how satisfied they were with their BT broadband, and how it compares to rivals like Sky broadband and Virgin Media.

Excessive charges
Been with BT Broadband since 2008 went paperless 2010/11. Unaware that exceeding useage was being e-mailed to BT e-mail account (which comes with broadband and which I never used) and as such my bills were creeping up. When they got over £200 I questioned them - that's when I was made aware of the BT e-mail account. My bills were being sent to my Hotmail a/c over useage to BT e-mail. In discussion with BT people found out I should/could have been on 10.99 a month not 18.99 a month. Not happy about the sharp practices of BT or the quality of the line - slow (distance from exchange - common excuse). POOR

NO CHOICE
Live in rural area in Scotland and have little choice but to use BT. They continually charged for over usage (which we never used) and eventually we changed over to a more expensive deal with them to get 40GB broadband. :(

I've had a great experience for many years!
I must be the odd one out, given some of the other reviews, but my experience of BT has been brilliant ever since I've had it. I've never had a loss of connection and get barely noticeable variation in speed at peak times. The customer service has also been excellent. When I had a problem with my phone line, they were great in talking me through how to test it for internal faults, then sent out an engineer when it proved to be an exchange problem. While I was in contact with them, I asked them about my broadband usage, just out of curiosity. They checked it for me and then took the initiative to advise me that I should be fine on a lower limit package, which would save me money. I call this good service indeed.

I have been with BT for over 20 years & the service has steadily deterioated, with frequent hub disconnections & requests to restart,& slow downloads, its noted the speed with which they charge extra £5 for slightly going over their limits, I kept with them on the basis that they would raise their game, unfortunatley they have not, & I am giving a lot of thought to jumping ship, shame really they started with such a huge advantage over any one else.

BT Total Broadband not as reliable as it once was
Until recently I have had no significant problems with BT, apart from one disconnetion a few years ago, the worst I have experienced is a go slow at peak times. However, I am now experiencing frequent connection problems, either drop outs or total loss of broadband connection, which are not only extremely annoying but also seem to occur when a near neighbour changes to Virgin Media or when Virgin vans are in the area. I tell myself it is coincidence but it has been happening too often of late.Another concern is the customer help, I would prefer a UK based service. It has been suggested that I upgrade to BT Infinity, but unless the reliability of service greatly improves I think that is not an option, at the moment I am seriously considering looking elsewhere for Broadband supplier.

Dreadful service, AVOID!
I was naieve enough to trust BT to provide me with a decent service and paid for two years for the 'fastest service' they could provide on my line. I was paying for their 20Mbit service, but never got anything better than 4.5Mbit. I grew increasingly dissatisfied with the poor speed and after BT insisted repeatedly that this was the fastest speed I could get in my flat due to the wiring, I decided to jump ship. BT again tried to convince me to stay when I cancelled my contact. They asked me why I was leaving and I said I wasn't happy with the speed, they insisted this was the fastest I would receive. Luckily I stuck to my guns and signed up with Virgin Media. Not only am I now paying slightly less that I was with BT, I am receiving between 8 and 10Mbit connection speeds - more than twice what I was with BT. I am also able to use BitTorrent (BT block this apart for about 30 minites over night). If you're thinking of joining BT, please don't. If you're with them and not happy with the speed you're receiving, please don't trust them if they try to convince you they're giving you the best deal possible.
