Mobile phones: Compare features & prices Apple iPhone 4S 16GB review Back to Results

The Apple iPhone 4S mobile phone may only be an incremental improvement on the iPhone 4, but Apple claim that it has included a better camera, faster processor and solved the antenna problem that hounded the last version. We've put these new features to the test to see if Apple's improvements really stack up.

I have a 32gb iPhone 4s, it is brilliant!!!. It does not drop calls like the iPhone 4, much faster than a S3, and feel that which ratings are all correct, except that, which should take the cost of item in to consideration. Cannot compare a donkey with a horse, as a horse cost much more to purchase. After 20 months of owning one, I turned down a FREE upgrade to iPhone 5, and took a huge discount on line rental. Now my battery is struggling to hold its charge...... Fortunately i have a charger at home, work & car, hence surviving.

Not as Good as the S3
I'm running both an S3 and iphone4S. I'm not sure how the overall Which results are arrived at but the big winner for me with the S3 is battery life -typically twice that of the iPhone. Not much point in having a flat phone. The fragility of the iphone is a concern - not so with the S3 which I've dropped several times (the iphone is encased in a rubber case). Prefer the larger S3 screen and camera seemd to me to be marginally better.

Well after the glowing reports and battery praise, I must be unlucky. First phone got hot and did not hold battery power so the provider has changed it for another one and guess what, even with 3G turned off, the phone periodically gets hot and yesterday went from 100% battery to flat in 5 hours. In that time, I made one 10 minute call and ensured all apps were turned off so my view is this phone should be in the worst buy category.

Best phone I've ever had!
I've had this phone for nearly a year now and since then I can only give it top marks! The camera, internet, iPod player, video and other facilities are amazing! I couldn't mention any faults on this phone at all. The battery life is good. I get a good 2 to 3 days use out of it from a full charge. The only thing I would say that does use the battery fairly rapidly is the internet and connectivity facilities such as sat nav. But apart from that I give it a 5 star rating. Having said that, the iPhone 5 is out now so I am looking forward to upgrading when I'm due.

You can fool some of the people .......AL
Briefly - This is the best phone out there because 1) It has the best screen I have seen.2) It has the best camera that i have used on a phone.3) Quality feel and [before you turn it on] look.It is NOT the best phone out there because1) It is not the easiest phone to use. One buttone does all is very, very, frustrating. 2) Screen customisation, ringtones etc are rubbish. The icons are the same as the ones that i had on the first i-pod that i had. In comparrison to an HTC EVO that i "upgraded from" it looks positivley dated. 2) I-tunes - horrible horrible horrible. You must use this expensive outlet for EVERYTHING that you do with your phone. [unless you jailbreak it]3) Try un-locking it. HA! Joke. 4) Keyboard is rubbish. Constantly making mistakes having to rectify takes longer than the EVO. 5) VERY Fragile. DONT DROP IT. No Gorrila Glass here. The sad fact is that, with the best Screen and Camera, I want to hang on to it. Everything else says move on.Can someone else not bring out a phone that has an equally good camera, screen and quality feel. I'll buy it. Oh yes Apple have a winner al right, and they are doing all the winning.

iphone worship
I have an iphone4. The calls are repeatedly being lost and it is often not possible to make calls at home when other handsets have no problems. The basic function of this phone is flawed and so the phone does not deserve the rating given by Which.I noticed in the test lab in December 2011 for the new 4s, the score was 85%. This has now crept up to 89%. Very strange! It is not possible for Which to do an unbiased review on an iphone because their test lab worship the gadget. I counted 13 pictures of an iphone in June 2011 magazine! Speaks for itself.

Why does the iPhone 4 and 4S have 3 entries (1 per memory) unlike other phones
as another review says ..... " the (samsung) SIII also comes with 16, 32 or 64GB of built-in memory." .The iPhone reviews should ALSO be one review per model and any impact of differing memory noted as a reason for choice (and costs if relevant - I am sure Samsung price theirs differently also !). The comments users have, will then also not get split over the 3 memory sizes. .. Can Which? please rework the review site to be consistent in this regard. One review per model only please.

Great phone
I recently switched from a HTC Desire to an iPhone 4S, and I have finally got to experience what the fuss is all about. Firstly it's a beautiful phone, both externally, and in terms of interface. Everything is wonderful, smooth, and clean looking. The interface never becomes jerky or slow, and although that sounds like a minor thing, it actually makes a huge amount of difference: Everything feels "solid" as a result. The keyboard is FAR improved to the one I had to suffer with for two years on my HTC Desire. I've only had my iPhone a few days and I'm already a fast typer than I ever was with that phone. Well done, Apple! That said, there are few things that my HTC Desire did better:1. The Desire came with an LED indicator that would flash green if I had any updates. That meant that I could glance at my phone across the room and see if I had any texts, missed calls, or emails. It was very handy. The iPhone 4S has a feature to use its flash in a similar manner, but it actually only flashes the instant you receive a text or email. Then it stops.2. The Desire came with a way to control the cursor. The "home" button on that phone also detected finger movement. If I was typing something and I wanted to go back a few characters, I could just move my thumb across it, and control the flashing cursor between the letters. It was extremely useful and I find myself trying to do it on the iPhone. Unfortunately on the iPhone all you can do is hold your finger on the screen and drag the cursor to where you want it to be. It's a little glitchy and a lot slower. Shame.3. When I wanted to search the internet for something with my HTC Desire, I could just press the "Search" button on the case. It was quick and intuitive. On the iPhone it's astonishingly laborious: You must go into the web browser and select the "Google" bar on the top right hand corner of the screen. This wouldn't be THAT bad if it wasn't for the fact that, if you're at the end of a really long webpage, it means you have to scroll all the way back up to the top just to get to the search bar. It's extremely, extremely annoying. I can only hope there's some shortcut that I don't know about.4. Although the scrolling is wonderfully smooth on the iPhone, it's very slow to move up and down large web pages (see above). On my Desire I could "flick" the screen with my finger and it would keep scrolling on its own, with its own inertia (it would eventually slow down depending on how fast I had "flicked" it). This was fantastic when all you want to do is check for new comments on a blog post. You could quickly and easily scroll down to the bottom of a page, without any finger strain. On the iPhone the screen stops as soon as you let go, making navigating long pages a very arduous experience.5. On top of the lack of an LED indicator, the iPhone is also lacking with regards to keeping you informed of updates. On my HTC Desire there would be an icon at the top of the screen, letting me know if I had any updates: An email, a text message, a missed call, a Facebook update, a new Twitter message. No matter where I was in my phone's interface, even on the lock screen, I could see if I had any updates, and what type they were. I can't seem to get a comparably useful system going on my iPhone, which is a bit disappointing. Finally, given all the hoo-hah on TV about having iTunes on your iPhone ("If you don't have an iPhone, you don't have iTunes", says the TV advert), I'm pretty disappointed at the music interface. Although I never used my Desire for music, so I can't compare, I was surprised at just how basic the iPhone's was. When I'm listening to a podcast, it's very useful (arguably essential) to be able to see the remaining time left, and yet there is no timer. There's not even a VISUAL indicator of how far you're through the podcast, like you'd expect. There's a Play/Pause button, a Skip/Forward/Back/Rewind button, and a volume slider, and that's it. The rest of the interface is also astonishingly ugly and perfunctory. It's unbelievably basic from a company that made its fortune selling portable music players, and it's shocking that Microsoft's Zune software (on it's Windows 7 phones) is light-years ahead (I really wish the Zune would come to the iPhone). So, ultimately, there are flaws with this phone, and I'm kind of surprised at the smart advances made by Google with their software. Instead of Apple focusing on gimmicky things like "Siri", I wish they'd taken the good parts of Google's software and integrated it into their own.Luckily, these annoyances don't ruin the phone, they just irk. It seems totally possible that the iPhone could be the best phone available on the market by a long distance, but instead their insistence on weird quirks means it's just a little bit better than the competition.Would I go back to an Android? Not right now. The experience on the iPhone, however frustratingly idiosyncratic, is still an enjoyable experience. The little graphical touches, the slickness of the presentation, and the simplicity of use, make for a largely enjoyable experience. It's nice to have a phone "that just works".Final note: If you're buying a 4S, be prepared to spend a bit extra on a case and/or screen protector. Not only is the iPhone notoriously fragile and prone to smashing if dropped, but it's also pretty slippery in your hand. A rubber case will make it less likely to make a tumble, and a screen protector will keep that glass screen scratch free. It's an unfortunate hidden cost, in my opinion.

Unreliable
Its good but is unreliable. My contacts randomly disappear, have been to the forum, apparantely is a known problem to which apple has no solution to date. You need to take a paper printout if you want to protect yourself from random deletionsThe update just deleted all my 'Notes'. There is no backup only for notes. Yes you can restore using itunes but that depends on when you realise the NOtes have disappeared. Using a smartphone the problem is you are continuously changing data on the phone, so if u restore the phone you will loose all the data that you may have changed.Honestly I am looking for a phone that has the speed of iphone and reliability of a 'Windows Phone'

Amazing! Which rate Apple highest again!
Its fine - just never understand how Which constantly rate Apple so much higher than everything else out there. Most other review sites can't split the 4GS and Samsung (with most going for the Samsung). Which manage a whopping 10% in favour of the 4GS.Hmmm
