Mobile phones: Compare features & prices HTC Sensation XE review Back to Results

The HTC Sensation XE is an improved version of the original Sensation smartphone. HTC has included Beats Audio headphones with this new incarnation and boosted the phone's processor from 1.2GHz to a faster 1.5GHz version. We sent it to our lab for testing to see how this new version measured up.

Good PDA but basic phone functions let it down
This replaced a 2 yr old Samsung Galaxy Spica and is a vast improvement, mainly due to the much faster processor, the bigger screen and the longer lived battery (I can go two days of light use without recharging). The one area it is inferior is the basic phone functions. There are no dedicated phone buttons so to make a new call you have to activate the phone navigate to the phone app, activate the keypad and then dial and hit send. The Samsung had traditional red/green buttons that "did the right thing" immediately. However, in every other respect the HTC is better. Web browsing is vastly superior and the pinch zoom makes reading even badly formatted web pages easy. The typing system is easy to use, very similar to the Apple iPhone system. The beats audio is a waste of space with horribly overblown bass and an unrealistic sound quality, I quickly dumped both the HTC music app and the headphones for alternatives.A final niggle is that I keep picking the phone up upside down. The little silver trim just looks to me like it should be at the bottom not the top! Even after 4 months I still can't get used to it. I have upgraded to Android 4 but frankly don't really see much difference...

Android 4
I've had this phone a few months now and upgraded it to Android 4 about 2 months ago. I'm surprised the Which review team didn't do this. Oce all I like the phone but I've had a couple of issues. I've pulled it out of my pocket a few times to find a screen that says something like "Your HTC has recovered from an unexpected restart. Tell HTC?" and a last week it would not fully charge with a message something like "Your phone is using more current that the charger. Close some apps" even after closing all the apps it would not charge. I spoke to HTC and they suggested a hard restart. This fixed it but then it was another evening of setting up my phone which is a pain in the butt. HTC customer service is fantastic though and I would recommend them to anyone. The Sense user interface is good too. It feels solid and overall I like it although if buying now I would probably look at the HTC One.Karajaal
