Mobile phones: Compare features & prices Sony Xperia S review Back to Results

The Sony Xperia S is a premium smartphone with a large, 4.3-inch display and a 12Mp camera. It's the first smartphone produced by Sony since its split from Ericsson - we sent it to our lab to see how this new solo offering would fare against established models such as the all-conquering iPhone 4S.

Excellent Phone
Great bluetooth connectivity when I, daily, use my bluetooth headphones.Great camera - adjust settings for full size (if needed).Great radio - though wired headphones or speaker needs to be attached to act as an ariel.Great display and easy & quick to use.I have friends with iPhones and no way would I lower my specs and swap with them.I also have a friend with the newer Experia Z which has a (slighty) larger screen and accepts micro SD cards to expand memory. Both features are tempting but the Z has no flash player. I will consider the Experia Z if I ever need 4G. I bought this a year ago when the best price was £380 - still glad I did. At only £300 now this is an excellent buy - compared to The Experia Z and, particularly, the iPhone. It still easily beats the iPhone specially as a music player (320 kbs) and radio - you won't find a radio on an iPhone.Only downside - was a bit awkward when updating Android through my desktop - needed a few tries before success. Might fare better updating straight from the phone using wi-fi.In summary - a fantastic phone - and, now, great value.

A Great Value All Round Smartphone!
This is a great smartphone that is also sleek and value for money with good battery life, the xperia S has a stunning 12mp camera with a traditional camera button on the side,it also has a very good interpretation of Androids OS.The speakers/earphones are loud and clear, great for listening to all types of music(on Sony`s brilliant Walkman app),videos & decent on phone calls.Even though the S has a very good looking screen, you do need to be fairly head on to view properly. The S connects seamlessly to any/most routers by wifi &,has a strong 3g signal. The only real downsides are that, the main function buttons(home etc.)are a bit small &,take a bit of getting use to.Pre-loaded apps that come bundled with the phone,ok fine have them but let the owner be able to uninstall any app they want, this is only possible if you "root" your Xperia S.Quite simply one of the best "all round" smartphones, highly recommended, full marks Sony.Pros:Screen,Mp3 Player(sound & function),Battery Life,Wifi,Design,Camera, cost,Sony`s fine interpretation of the Android OS.Cons:Function buttons,Pre-loaded apps needs root to uninstalled,Viewing angles.Thank you for reading.

Great phone
Have had this phone almost 6 months and I am very happy with it. The display is noticeably sharper than on my previous phone (Motorola Atrix 4G) and the extra screen size makes the phone much more usable. Has been very stable, no unexpected reboots. I was considering the Samsung S3, but this phone was a good £100 cheaper (I buy my phones outright), so this phone represents very good value for money.

A great phone!
This is my first smart phone and I researched the market well prior to buying this. The most important features for me were the quality of the music player, built-in FM radio, and the camera quality. (I was amazed to learn that the Apple iphones do NOT have built-in FM radios, and actually contacted Apple to double check that fact!) In my opinion, the Sony Xperia S has the best camera that I have seen on a ‘phone, (iphone 4S included). The colour saturation and level of detail is fine for my purposes; I routinely print some of my photos out at A4 size. I photograph on the 9MP setting to keep the widescreen format, although the camera will go up to 12 MP. Attaching the HDMI cable between the phone and the TV enables a slideshow to be set up in seconds, for viewing on the TV screen; likewise videos. I also like the panoramic sweep facility on the camera to obtain panoramic photos. I love the built-in FM radio and I regularly play my own music on the phone after downloading my CD tracks to the PC and then loading the phone with them via the Sony PC Companion software that comes with the phone. The graphic equalizer on the phone works well too, for fine adjusting your music. All in all, I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone who is serous about music!

I was given this phone at Christmas as a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.It came with the Gingerbread Android system. On a recent upgrade check, I was offered the Ice cream sandwhich android which I accepted.I think this will be an automatic option when connected to the computer.

Xperia S, everything and more
I had an X10 Xperia before the Xperia S. No more Lag. No more force closes. The picture quality is exellent - I often watch You Tube videos through the built in app in HQ. The front facing camera is great if you use Skype. The phone comes with an HDMI lead to connect to a TV and you can use it to play games or watch You Tube on the big screen. On one of the 5 home screens there is a handy widget that short cuts to Wi-Fi ,Bluetooth,Brightness,Gps,Data,Sound,Sync,Airplane mode,Roaming and Hotspot, which lets you use your phone as a modem.Battery life is ok under normal use - mine lasts from 7am to 11pm(with a bit to spare) - reading a few chapters from a book app, a few texts, half a dozen 5min phone calls, a few You Tube videos, music player to a bluetooth head set for 3-4 hours, checking email and checking Facebook feeds. Some games, like Angry Birds Rio do drain the battery fairly fast and if you use the satnav for any length of time keep it plugged in to a car charger!Running on Android version 2.3 I think this phone is super fast loading apps or running content on the phone and also when using the browser or You Tube to seemlessly watch video content as long as you are on WiFi .It's pretty good on 3G.Shame you can't change the battery as it's built in.I doubt you'll find a faster camera - press the shutter button with the phone locked and it takes a picture almost as fast as claimed. All in all I'm glad I got it!
