As the successor to Nikon’s Best Buy Coolpix P80 digital camera, Nikon’s Coolpix P90 should give decent results. The Nikon Coolpix P90 features a 26-624mm lens, which provides one of the most powerful optical zooms available for a camera of this class, and our first look video shows it in action.

With the Nikon Coolpix P90's zoom factor measuring 24x, only the digital camera, with its 26x zoom, trumps the Nikon Coolpix P90 in this department. The Nikon Coolpix P90 offers 12.1Mp of resolution and has a maximum ISO of 6,400 - though this level of sensitivity can only be achieved with a compromised resolution.

Nikon's Coolpix P90 digital camera features several manual overrides, including shutter speed and aperture priority modes, as well as full manual control. And there are also 15 scene modes to choose from, including museum, dusk/dawn and portrait.

While the Nikon Coolpix P80 took pictures with excellent colour reproduction, it proved to be a little slow between shots in our initial tests. . We hope to see the Nikon Coolpix P90 improve in this area when we get the results of the full Which? digital camera test back in the near future.

One new feature that Nikon has added to the Nikon Coolpix P90 is the three-inch vari-angle LCD, which aids composition when you're unable to be directly behind the camera.
The camera comes with Nikon's 'Smart Portrait System' technology, which includes face priority, smile timer, blink warning, blink proof and in-camera red-eye correction functions. As with most digital cameras, it can capture video footage, but only in standard definition.
