It has an very impressive 18x optical zoom
Canon IXUS 980 IS
The successful Ixus range of cameras has produced several Best Buys, and this model is the first in the range to feature partial manual control of both aperture and exposure settings. It has Canon's latest processor, making it quick between shots. It's a surprisingly slim camera for a model with so many features, and it will comfortably fit into most pockets.
The IS stands for image stabilisation, and it's an automatic feature that reduces the effect of camera shake when taking pictures. Camera shake can cause pictures to blur, especially when zoomed in. Many cameras now feature this technology, but the results don't always improve image quality.
For more information about this model read our digital camera report.
Canon Powershot G10
Canon's Powershot G10 supercedes the hugely popular G9. It's packed full of innovative features. It boasts 14.7 Mp of resolution and is the first camera in Canon's G series to pack a wide angle lens, which makes it better for indoor shots - especially when you're taking group photos of your friends or family. It's almost twice the size of the Canon IXUS 980, and while it might fit in your jacket pocket, it would be a tight squeeze to get it in your trouser pocket.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 has an impressive 18x zoom, making it ideal for sporting occasions and trips to the zoo. It's easy to use and replicates colours naturally.
It's full of sophisticated functions, but it weighs 450g and is also quite large. It may fit in a large coat pocket, but it's more likely that you'll need to carry this model on a strap around your neck, or in a bag.
This model's impressive review and test results can be read in our digital camera report.

Sony alpha 700
Sony's alpha 700 is packed with all the manual controls that you'd expect from a digital SLR, but it also takes great photos when the automatic focus is used.
The kit lens supplied measures 18-70mm, which when attached to the camera gives a range of 27-105mm. In the video, we used an 18-250mm providing the camera with a much more powerful zoom. Even with its kit lens it weighs more than a kilo, and you'll definitely need to either wear this model around your neck or carry it in a bag when you're out and about.
