Sony alpha 290 and 390 July 2010
Sony a290 and a390 digital SLRs
Sony has recently added two new digital SLRs to its line up: the aplha 290 (also known as the a290), and the alpha 390 (or the a390). In this video we look at the differences between the two cameras, and the position they hold in Sony's digital SLR line up
Sony’s line up of digital SLRs is fascinating. The naming conventions seem to make sense, but the differences between similar models can be so subtle that it can confuse. The rule of thumb is that the lower the first of the three numbers in the name is, then the more basic the camera is; and the higher the first number is, then the more advanced the camera is. An alpha 100, would therefore be aimed squarely at first time digital SLR users, while the alpha 900, would be designed for the most advanced users.
Here, we’re taking a look at two models: the alpha 290 and the alpha 390. As the names suggest, they are relatively basic models for those looking to upgrade from a point-and-shoot camera to a DSLR.

They both feature the same 14.2Mp sensor and at first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking the spec sheet for each model is a carbon copy of the other’s. Look closely, however, and there are a couple of differences other than the cameras’ name badges.
Adjustable LCD
Firstly, the a390 has an articulated LCD so that it can be tilted upwards and downwards to make shooting easier when it’s not being done at eye-level. The a290 doesn’t have this feature.
Secondly, the a390 offers Live View when using auto-focus (AF), which the a290 doesn’t. Live View means that you can see what you’re taking a picture of on the LCD as you take it. The feature is becoming more and more prominent now, and it’s quite rare for a new DSLR to launch without it.
And that’s where the differences stop – other than the price of course.
We’ll run both of these cameras full the full test program in our labs soon, but until then you can check out reviews of a number of digital SLRs, including Sony models, here.
