Digital cameras: Compare features & prices Canon PowerShot S100 review Back to Results

The Canon PowerShot S100 compact digital camera is an addition to the S-series of Powershot cameras, following in the footsteps of the S90 and S95. This 12Mp pocket model, which has an impressive host of manual controls, is aimed at enthusiastic photographers or DSLR owners looking for a backup camera. But is it good enough to be a Best Buy? Amazing photos from such a compact camera
Changed from Lumix TZ30 to this. The photos are in a different league no doubt due to the sensor size. I shoot RAW and use Lightroom to process. Worth the effort as the photos come out that bit sharper, and you can also compensate for white balance errors etc. JPEGs are very good also. Low noise even at ISO 1600, without too much smudge (of course if you shoot RAW you will get the best results). In some situations comes very close to DSLR quality. Video is very nice, even in low light due to the wide aperture (much better than TZ30 in low light, with better sound).

Good camera with a solid feel to it. Optically sound and impressive with low light photography. One downside: The battery capacity is not enormous. After 200 shots you ll be looking for the charger. It will take a long time before I will want to part from it !

Love it!
This is a superb pocket camera! In auto and scene modes it takes fabulous photo's without any messing about, but if you want to set speed, aperture and ISO settings etc you can, and this will give you more flexibility to compose photo's as you want with depth of field as required. I'm not sure why the review critisises the flash - when you can set more or less flash on a picture I bought this to replace an SX210IS which is distinctly average, but the S100 is the bogs do-da's in comparion with this and every other pocket camera I have owned (several)! The only negative was the price when I bought it shortly after it ws released, but now this has come down drastically it represents an absolutely top buy.
