Digital photo frame reviews: Features explained
Digital photo frame essentials
Digital photo frame size
Digital photo frames come in a range of sizes. The most popular size of digital photo frame is about seven inches, but 10-inch screens are widely available.
Digital photo frame size is measured across the diagonal, and, as you’d expect, the larger the frame, the more expensive it is.
Digital photo frame resolution
Resolution is measured in a ‘pixel by pixel’ format. A digital photo frame with a resolution of 720x480 will have a width of 720 pixels and a height of 480 pixels (for a total resolution of 345,600). For the best clarity, look for the highest resolution.
Digital photo frame screens usually have a widescreen format with a 16:9 aspect ratio the same as a widescreen TV, or 4:3 like a traditional TV.
Less common is a 3:2 format, though this is quite popular with camera manufacturers as it matches the ratio of a standard 4x6 inch print.
Digital photo frame controls

Look for simple controls that are easy to use. Buttons should be clearly labelled and accessible – ideally located on the top of the digital photo frame, rather than on the back.
Digital photo frame memory
Many digital photo frames have a built-in memory so that you can copy photos straight from your computer or digital camera to the frame. If there’s no internal memory, you’ll need to leave your memory card inserted in the digital photo frame.
Digital photo frames can usually accept most types of memory cards. Popular ones include CompactFlash (CF), Memory Stick (MS), Secure Digital (SD), xD, and MicroDrive (MD). Check that the frame you plan to buy is compatible with the card used by your camera. See the Which? digital camera reviews for more information about memory cards and Best Buy cameras.
Digital photo frame extras
Interchangeable inserts
Some of the digital photo frames we tested have interchangeable frame inserts. This is a nice touch, as it lets you choose one to suit your décor.
MP3 capability
More expensive frames allow you to add background music to your slideshows, making them even more enjoyable.
Some digital photo frames have remote controls
Digital photo frame remotes
A remote control is a bonus but, as they’re small, they’re easy to lose. Some digital photo frames only have a power button, with all other features accessed via the remote control.
Wi-Fi
Some digital photo frames have the ability to connect to a wireless (Wi-Fi) network so you can stream pictures direct from your computer, or send them directly to the frame via the internet or email.
TV Out
A TV Out connection allows you to display your photos on your TV – great for when you have friends and family visiting.
Bluetooth
This enables you to copy photos from a Bluetooth-compatible device, such as a mobile phone, straight to the digital photo frame.
