Entry Level DSLR
I took the plunge and moved up a level from my more that capable Panasonic FS10, (which I still use) and purchased the D3100. Its now 6 months down the line and this camera still impresses. Take the time and learn to experiment with the shutter/aperture settings and this camera will not let you down. Get out there and familiarise/practice with this camera. You will not be disappointed.

Many thanks for your post - to clarify the difference in star rating for image stabilisation between the D3100 (scoring 3-stars) and the D5100 (scoring 5-stars), despite both using the same VR lens, this is because our rating for image stabilisation takes into account the overall picture quality achieved when the camera's image stabilisation performance is tested. As well as judging the sharpness of the resulting image (reduced blurring), we evaluate the cleanness and detail of the image itself. Some cameras can produce images without noticeable blur, but produce excessive image noise and reduced detail in the process. The Nikon D5100 has a different sensor to the D3100, and a different processor. When we test cameras for their image stabilisation effectiveness, we include challenging low light conditions to draw the cameras apart. It was because of these conditions that the D5100 pulled ahead in its image stabilisation performance, delivering cleaner images than the D3100 despite both cameras using the same VR lens - the effectiveness of image stabilisation can be as much a matter of the sensor within the camera as the stabilising mechanism within the lens (or around the sensor).

star rating confusion?
excellent camera, great image quality. I'm confused about your image stabilisation rating, you only give the D3100 a 3 star rating but give the D5000 a five star rating - what confuses me is that in Nikon's the stabilisation is not in the camera, it's in the lense, and in both reviews the same 18-55mm VR lense has been used, so how can there be so much difference between the two?

My first dslr
I spent 4 weeks researching entry level DSLRs before opting for the D3100. I wanted a camera that would guide me through my relatively amateur first shots without holding me back once I was confidently using fully manual settings. In my humble opinion, for those looking for a first time DSLR purchase, the other options on the market are either dated or pale in significance by comparison. if video is your thing, get a video camera. For still images, however, the D3100 will do an outstanding job.

Not Really an entry level DSLR
Having had a Nikon D40, then a Nikon D5000, and now a D3100 i dont understand why so many reviews class it a a entry level machine. The spec of this camera is equal to other brands Semi Pro cameras. The features out power the D5000 apart from a few things like ISO etc.Interesting that you say its plastic looking, have you guys looked at the entry level Canons ?Make sure when you buy you get the VR lens , some outlets are selling with the non VR lens kit for around £20 less.I have quite large hands and the body is a perfect size for me, the buttons are also great and well placed. The only improvement would be to bundle it with the 18-105mm VR lens that comes with the D90.Picture quality 5\5Menus 4-5overall 5/5

Thanks for your comment - just to say, our star rating for overall picture quality is based on over 130 different tests and assessments. The low light rating is a subsection of these assessments, and itself is based on nearly 30 separate test assessments. The Nikon D3100 scored well across most criteria, but didn't perform quite strongly enough for a 5-star overall rating for picture quality.

Thinking of buying Nikon d3100
I have no experience, but whilst trying to decide which DSLR to buy, I am surprised that you put the Panasonic at the top of the list when strictly speaking, it isn't an SLR and no specialist magazine rates it higher than the Nikon d3100 or the Pentax k-r.

For it's price point, the best entry level DSLR
Which's review is lsrgely accurate. Autofocus in live view is not good but the camera's autofucus there the viewfinder for photos is great.I find it hard to see why it only gains four**** for overall image quality when you've already given it five***** for low light and five***** for good light! This really makes me worry about some of Which's reviews especially that of the D90 which I and many others feel is very innacurate!!
