We rate the speed and accuracy of the camera's autofocus system - this is dependent on the tested kit lens as well as the body of the camera.

Includes shutter delay, start-up time, shot-to-shot time, quality of manual, general ease of use and lots more
Overall Movie Quality
A total assessment of the camera's video quality in various lighting conditions, taking into account sharpness, focusing, colour accuracy and smoothness.

Launch date
Older models may be harder to track down - but you may find a bargain. Test programmes and key features change over time but we re-evaluate results for older models to make them as comparable as possible with newer models.

System type
As well as Digital SLRs, there are a range of compact camera systems available. These allow you to change lenses, but tend to be smaller than DSLR cameras.
Image stabilisation
If a DSLR has an image stabiliser built into its body, around the sensor, then you will not have to buy lenses with image stabilisers - these can be expensive.
Movie mode
720p, 1080i and 1080p are all high definition recording resolutions, though 1080p, or 'full-HD' is more detailed and tends to be the smoothest.
