Freeview and Freesat set-top boxes: Freesat digital TV Freesat channels

Watching HD TV

Freesat is a good option if you want to watch HD TV

Freesat offers around 140 TV and radio channels. Most of the familiar names are there on Freesat – BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five digital channels – plus a few less familiar ones, such as Al-Jazeera English and Euronews.

However, there is some common content missing, including the History channel.

How much Freesat content is HD?

As for the million dollar question? Yes, high-definition TV is being broadcast – but only in bite-sized chunks at the moment.

The BBC HD channel is available, as is ITV's HD content (which is exclusive to Freesat viewers) on selected programmes by pressing the red button.

Freesat says there will be more HD content in the future as more becomes available (programmes have to be recorded in HD as well as broadcast and displayed in HD).

For more information on HDTV see the Which? guide to high definition TV explained.

To get the most out of Freesat you will need an HD-ready TV. Most new TVs sold will be HD-ready but it's worth double checking.
