DVD recorders: How to choose a digital TV recorder Digital TV recorder buying advice

PVR remote control

Check the PVR's remote is easy to use

When you're out shopping, don't be afraid to ask a shop assistant whether you can have a play with your chosen recorder before you buy it. Consider the following points:

Remote control

The remote control is the primary way that you’ll control a recorder and finding one that is well laid-out, intuitive and comfortable is an important part of its ease of use.

Take a look at our PVR reviews and DVD recorder reviews to see what our experts thought of the remote controls they used.

Electronic programme guide (EPG)

The electronic programme guide (EPG) is an on-screen display of the TV (and radio) schedule, usually covering the forthcoming seven or eight days. It's a vital part of a digital TV recorder and its layout is crucial as to how easy it is to use. The speed at which you can navigate around the EPG, find the programme you want and select it for recording has a huge impact on how easy the machine is to use.

Most DVD recorders have their own EPG layout, and some are much better than others. Ideally, an EPG should be simple to navigate, clear to read and display several channels at once. By scrolling up/down, you’ll access other channels and scrolling left/right, you’ll move forwards and backwards through the week.

Fan noise

Some recorders generate some noise from their hard disk and cooling fans. It’s unlikely to bother most people, but ask for a demo in the shop if you think this may annoy you.

Disc loading times

Patience is a virtue when operating some DVD recorders. Compared with VCRs and PVRs, many are slow to load a disc and get recording, taking on average more than a minute to start recording on a new unformatted disc.

How to buy the best digital TV recorder at the best price

PVRs can be bought on the high street or online. High-street shopping obviously allows you to see (and possibly play with) your PVR before parting with your cash.

Good sales staff will also be able to answer your queries. However, the lowest prices will be found online.
