Samsung LE40750: affordable 3D TV looks like this

• Type: Active shutters
• Size: 40-inch LCD
• Price: £800
• Extra glasses: £60 to £100 a pair

3D Pros: Super detail, bold colour, a strong 3D effect and great sense of depth. Great price

3D Cons: Inconsistent ghosting effects, 40-inches just doesn’t cut it for 3D TV

This is the cheapest 3D TV we’ve seen to date (under a grand) but the low price tag doesn’t mean a compromise in quality. It delivers on the 3D ‘wow’ factor with a strong picture, bursting with depth. However, just like the Samsung LED and plasma models we’ve tested some slight ghosting mean it falls just short of the current Panasonic benchmark. C750 full results.

3D picture

The 3D picture delivers a fine sense of depth, matched by a bright, detailed and sharp finish. Colours look strong and vibrant and there’s not much picture noise. Yet we spotted intermittent examples of crosstalk on both 3D Blu ray (Monsters versus Aliens) and on some Sky 3D sport sequences. For instance, football looked fine but we spotted double court lines during our tennis sequence.

The ghost images are caused by ‘crosstalk’, an overlap of the images flashed rapidly to each eye. It’s not a huge problem, but once you notice, it can be quite annoying.

3D Glasses

Out of all the active shutter glasses available, those that come with Samsung TVs are the most comfortable to wear – but still feel like a chore next to the cheap and cheerful passive glasses used in the cinema or supplied with the LG LD950.

This TV uses active shutter glasses which synchronise the TV via an infrared signal and rapidly blink on and off, playing back full 1080p images to the right eye and left eye at a rate of 50 frames per second.
