3D Pros: Good depth and minimal ghosting

3D Cons: Missing shadow detail, dim picture, patchy backlight, glasses are heavy and uncomfortable

Toshiba’s first stab at 3D has come late in the day, but it looks like it may have been worth the wait. It’s done a reasonable job of disguising ghosting side effects and packed in enough depth to make this one of the better 3DTVs we’ve seen. Only a patchy backlight and slightly dim picture detract, but overall the pros outweigh the cons.

3D picture

The depth was good and detail mostly strong on most of the scenes we watched on it (though not on a par with the Panasonic VT20 reference). Ghosting was largely kept to a minimum and was well disguised.

On the downside, our expert panel all picked out a lack of detail in darker shadow areas, a patchy backlight (the bit that illuminates the screen), and an overly dim picture. We tried adjusting the backlight to little effect. The luminance and lack of detail does occasionally reduce the impact of the 3D effect. For instance, even a bright and colourful clip of ‘Monsters versus Aliens’ looked slightly subdued on the Toshiba.

3D glasses

Like virtually all the 3D TVs on the market, this uses active shutter glasses, which synchronise with the TV via an infrared signal and rapidly blink on and off. Full 1080p images are alternately shown to the right eye and left eye at a rate of 50 frames per second, creating the illusion of 3D depth. As with most brands on the market the Toshiba glasses are quite heavy and uncomfortable to wear.
