Net TV interface: Net TV
Pros: Easy to set-up, option to access the full internet
Cons: Light on apps, remote makes it awkward to use
Pick of the apps: YouTube, Dailymotion
Philips' Net TV delivers full web surfing
The Philips 46PFL9705 was the only TV on test that offered full internet access. It’s easy to set up, but difficult to use because of its awkward search option, poorly labelled remote and waffle-packed instruction manual.
Video apps YouTube and Dailymotion aside, the 15-strong selection of apps was disappointing. There’s no access to an app store to download extras, some are subscription only and too many were country specific (a French news app and German car app aren’t going to win awards in the UK).
Tiresome navigation
On the plus side, the on-screen keyboard used for entering text searches in YouTube was better than most. Unfortunately, though the remote is responsive, you can’t click and hold to navigate around the keyboard. Repeated clicking quickly gets tiresome.
This makes using the full internet option far more of a pain than it should be. Why on earth would you want to plod around the worldwide web on your telly when you can do it far more efficiently on your PC? And if you’re thinking, ‘surely you can navigate to the BBC site and watch iPlayer’ well you can’t. iPlayer needs Flash and it can’t be installed on the TV.
