The Panasonic DMR-EX83 is a DVD and hard disk recorder that has a digital tuner, but there is no analogue tuner which means it is not suitable for those who haven't yet switched to digital TV. We tested this DVD recorder to see how well it fared.

DVD recorder disc formats
The recording formats the machine can use to record.
Recording time (hrs)
The stated standard definition recording capacity (in best quality mode) for models with combined hard-drive recorders.
Bookmarking
This feature lets you mark your favourite scenes for easy access.
Resume
This lets you start playing a disc from where you left off. Some can do this with a number of discs, as shown.
Flexible recording
Makes sure the programme you record fits onto the disc. The recorder matches the length of the programme to the amount of space left on the disc by adjusting recording speeds.
Compatible discs (playback)
We show which types of recordable DVD discs the machine will play.
MP3
The machine can play recordable CD discs containing MP3 files.
JPeg
Can playback discs containing .jpg picture files, displaying pictures on screen. These may be self-created discs or picture discs from processors.
Surround sound
The machine contains a decoder for digital surround sound - you'll still need external amps and speakers.
Digital output

HDMI
