The UK launch of the Google Android G1 smartphone from T-Mobile will be October 30, 2008.

Over 25,000 models have already been pre-ordered in the UK, with a total of 1.5 million orders placed worldwide.

The T-Mobile G1 will go head-to-head with Apple’s 3G iPhone in the build up to Christmas. Korean manufacturers HTC hope to sell 600,000 during this busy sales period.

Google’s entry into the mobile phone market

Jon Barrow, Which? senior telecom researcher, said: ‘This is an exciting product launch and the hype surrounding the T-Mobile G1 is understandable. It will be interesting to see the effect that the arrival of Google has on the mobile phone market.’

The search engine provider, Google, will provide the Android operating system that will power the new T-Mobile G1, and the open source software will allow anyone to create programs to run on this platform.
