Asda has announced that it will open 14 new stores this year and expand 15 existing ones.
New stores will be built in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and Chelmsley Wood in the West Midlands.
The move will create 7,000 jobs and follows Waitrose’s announcement that it will expand by 22 stores in 2009.
Customers looking for a bargain
Andy Clarke, retail director of Asda, said that customers were tightening their belts and moving to discount ranges.
