Amazon has launched the Kindle 2 in the US, an ebook reader that is set to continue the success of the original Kindle.
Available in the US only, the Kindle has been a hit for Amazon.com due to the huge range of ebooks, newspapers and available for it – well over 200,000 – with newer book releases marking it out from other ebook readers. The wireless connectivity when downloading books sets it apart from competitors.
The Kindle 2 has 2GB of internal memory, far more than the first Kindle. Amazon claims that it can store more than 1500 books, compared to the original Kindle’s 200. It’s also thinner than the original, at just over a third of an inch thick. Amazon claims sharper text for less eyestrain, and faster page turns for a smoother reading experience overall.
Improved battery life is promised. Although ebook readers aren’t power hungry, Amazon says that the Kindle 2 will last for over two weeks of reading with the wireless connectivity turned off on a single charge.
No announcement has been made about the Kindle coming to the UK, but shoppers here still have a wide range of ebook readers to choose from. Read our review of the Sony PRS-505 Reader.
Which? prinicipal researcher Christopher Christoforou said: ‘Fans of ebooks in the US will be excited by the launch of the Kindle 2. Although ebook readers haven’t exploded in popularity here in the UK, we think that if the Kindle 2, with its catalogue of over 200,000 books, was to launch here there would be massive interest.’
