Samsung is set to launch a successor to its popular Tocco F480. The Ultra Edition Tocco, or S8300, will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2009 next week in Barcelona.

Samsung claims that the Best Buy Samsung Tocco F480 was the best-selling contract phone in the UK for the second half of 2008, and the hype surrounding the new Tocco Ultra Edition suggests that the upgrade is also likely to be a popular handset.

The Tocco Ultra Edition features a slide-out keypad and a 2.8 inch OLED touchscreen. The camera features 8Mp of resolution and the meagre 75MB of internal memory can be compensated with a 16GB microSD memory card.

The new Tocco features an FM tuner, but lacks a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and is unable to connect to a wireless network.

Sophisticated and basic mobile phones

Ben Stevens, Which? researcher, said: ‘It seems that Samsung is attempting to hog the limelight at this year’s Mobile World Congress with an array of mobile phone launches ranging from the top-end, sophisticated models like the new Tocco, to the most basic devices, such as the Samsung E110.

‘The original Tocco F480 impressed us last year in most of our tests, however we found that the camera function was somewhat disappointing. The new Tocco has a more powerful sensor, and we anticipate improved photography results when we come to testing this model.’

The price of the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition has not yet been confirmed, but we expect it to be launched in the UK next month.
