Olympus has announced the 10Mp E-450, a light and compact entry-level digital SLR. The camera is due to be launched in May 2009, with a recommended retail price of around £450 (including 14-42mm kit lens).

Olympus describes the camera as being ‘developed with amateurs in mind,’ and is squarely aimed at consumers looking to buy their first digital SLR. The camera features three in-camera art filters, which Olympus has included to ‘encourage new comers to DSLR to have fun and explore their creative potential’.

Art filters

A similar selection of art filters were first introduced on the more advanced Olympus E-30, and the newly announced E-450 features three of the more popular filters: Pop Art, Soft Focus and Pin Hole.

The Pop Art filter is designed to vividly enhance colours to give the image a happy, light-hearted feel. The Soft Focus is described as introducing an otherworldly atmosphere to the photos; and the Pin Hole effect is said to reduce peripheral brightness making the image appear as though it is being seen through a pin hole.

Affordable entry-level DSLRs

Richard Parris, Which? camera expert, said: ‘It’s encouraging to see an increasing number of affordable entry-level DSLRs emerging, as this gives yet more choice and value to consumers. We’ll be testing the E-450 as soon as its available to see if its picture quality can match up to more expensive models.’
