Sony announces the Bravia Z5500

LCD TV with 200Hz Motionflow technology

Sony Bravia Z5500

Sony has announced the Z5500 TV, the latest Full HD Sony Bravia LCD to feature Motionflow 200Hz technology, a processing facility that has impressed Which? researchers on previous models.

Sony describe the 200Hz Motionflow process as using ‘sophisticated algorithms to calculate three additional frames for every original, upping the frame rate from 50 to 200 per second’.

Sony Applicast

The 1920 x 1080 full HD Z5500 will launch in June, when it will be available in  40, 46, and 52-inch variations. It will feature a DLNA port, four HDMIs and 2 Scart sockets.

It will work with Sony’s Bravia Link, meaning that other Sony devices can be controlled with the same remote control, and it will also feature Sony’s Applicast service, allowing users to access news fed from the internet without interrupting the show being watched.

Energy efficient TV

The range of Z5500s also feature a host of energy saving functions that Sony believes will cut power usage by around 30% in comparison with similar models from 2008. Such functions include the Energy Saving Switch, ambient light sensors and Idle Mode: a mode which turns the TV to standby when unused for a preset period of time.

Michael Briggs, Which? TV expert, said: ‘The Z4500 series impressed us with great picture quality, which we attribute to the 200Hz Motionflow processing. The Z5500 is powered by a Bravia 3 engine, and while we have yet to receive full results on a set that uses this new Sony engine, the specifications suggest that Sony are on the right track for receiving yet another Best Buy.’
