Tesco customers can leave packaging behind

Scheme to be trialled in two stores

Tesco is to trial a German-style scheme where customers can remove and leave packaging in stores after paying for their shopping.

Tesco will accept plastic and paper packaging only, and says it aims to recycle as much as possible.

The scheme will be piloted for six weeks at Tesco Extra stores in Guildford, Surrey, and Ilminster in Somerset.

Packaging views

Tesco said the aim of the trial was to establish customers’ views on excessive packaging.

Alasdair James, head of energy, waste and recycling at Tesco, said: ‘Packaging left by customers at the store will tell us a lot about areas we may need to look at again as well as where we have got it right.’
