The Fiesta-sized will be offered in two- and four-wheel drive forms, with both petrol and diesel engines offering emissions of 130g/km or less.

This, Toyota claims, is an all-time low for an all-wheel drive passenger car and it means you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of 4×4 ownership – such as improved , all-weather traction and the ability to shrug off speed bumps, kerbs and pot holes – without paying the price on fuel or car tax.

Six-speed Cruiser

One spec level will be offered and it’s pretty generous, encompassing a six-speed manual gearbox, 16-inch alloys, Bluetooth phone connectivity, keyless entry and ignition, privacy glass and a six-speaker stereo system with MP3 compatibility and an aux-in socket. Prices start at £14,500 for the two-wheel drive petrol 1.3 Dual VVT-i, while the four-wheel drive 1.4 D-4D diesel costs £16,400.

Various option packs will enable buyers to personalise their cars according to their own needs and budget; the Style Pack adds metal scuff plates and extra chrome trim, while the Urban Pack throws in parking sensors and body cladding to protect against scuffs and bumps. Leather and sat nav packs are also available.

With rivals like the newly launched fresh on the scene, the Urban Cruiser is going to face some tough competition straight out of the blocks. But the chunky, compact dimensions, low emissions and typical Toyota reliability are bound to be a hit with SUV downsizers and trendy urbanites alike.
