Tiscali UK to be bought by Carphone Warehouse

TalkTalk rises in ranks of UK broadband providers

Tiscali customers concerned by recent news that Tiscali was under financial pressure can feel reassured about the future of their broadband service following the announcement that fellow UK broadband and phone provider Carphone Warehouse is to buy Tiscali’s UK business.

Carphone Warehouse’s agreement to buy Tiscali follows the collapse in March of talks between Tiscali and Sky. In April, Tiscali suffered a further blow after its auditors expressed concerns over its accounts.

TalkTalk/Tiscali deal creates broadband giant

Carphone Warehouse claims its purchase of Tiscali UK will make its home broadband brand, TalkTalk, the UK’s largest home broadband provider with 4.25 million subscribers. Currently, Tiscali is the fifth biggest UK broadband provider while TalkTalk holds third place in the broadband market behind the likes of BT and cable broadband provider Virgin Media.

You can see how both TalkTalk and Tiscali compare to other UK home broadband providers in the Which? broadband review – we’ve found that smaller broadband providers often do better for broadband customer satisfaction than the broadband big players such as BT, Tiscali and TalkTalk.

If you want to save money by bundling your broadband with a home phone or digital TV service, see how Which? members rated TalkTalk and Tiscali in the Which? review of phone, internet and TV packages.

What the buyout means for Tiscali customers

TalkTalk says that Tiscali’s customers will automatically continue to receive uninterrupted phone and broadband service.

Their Tiscali email addresses will remain the same and their broadband, phone and TV customer service contacts will not change. Tiscali customers will continue to be billed from Tiscali, with no changes to their bill.

TalkTalk’s deal to buy Tiscali is subject to approval by EU competition authorities and is expected to complete by the end of June.

Which? broadband expert Ceri Stanaway says: ‘This news will doubtless come as a relief to many Tiscali customers who may have been worrying about the future of their home phone, broadband and TV services.

‘We hope that, as TalkTalk promises, neither Tiscali nor TalkTalk customers will suffer any negative consequences from the merger of the two broadband giants.’
