Samsung introduces three new camcorders

The pocket HD U10 and the SD upscaling K40 and K44

The Samsung HMX-U10: another addition to the increasingly popular pocket HD camcorder market

Samsung has jumped onto the pocket HD camcorder bandwagon, with the launch of the HMX-U10, a pocket HD device. The company has also launched the SMX-K40 and SMX-K44, two standard-definition upscaling camcorders.

The Samsung U10 is a compact model that follows the recent trend of pocket camcorders, which has included models from Flip and Kodak. The U10 weighs 95g and measures just 56mm x 103mm x 15.5mm, making it highly portable.

As well as capturing video in 1920×1080 resolution, the Samsung U10 is also able to take 10Mp still images. It has a two-inch LCD monitor.

The Samsung K40 and K44 are standard-definition camcorders that use processors to make the picture quality appear to be high definition when played back on a high-definition TV through an HDMI cable.

The K44 features 16GB of internal memory, while the K40 relies upon the use of SD/SDHC cards to store the video files it creates. The two camcorders feature a 52x optical zoom, which can be increased to 65x through, what Samsung calls, the Intelli-Zoom. Samsung describes this feature as being more reliable than a standard digital zoom.

SD upscaling

The two standard definition camcorders also feature optical image stabilisation – a tool designed to reduce the sea-sickness effect of shaky hands on video clips.

All three of these new camcorders provide built-in editing features, so when plugged into any PC or laptop, a basic video editing suite will be available. These models also feature animated thumbnails. These are useful when looking back though the video files recorded to the memory, and when highlighted, they play a short clip making it easier for the user to find the clip they are looking for.

Richard Parris, Which? camcorder expert, said: ‘The Samsung U10 is the first pocket camcorder we’ve seen that can record in a higher resolution than 720p. These pocket models often can’t match the performance of larger HD camcorders, but we’ll be interested to see if the U10 can hold its own in our thorough testing. SD upscaling usually disappoints in out tests, so we’ll also be keen to see how these two SD camcorders perform in our labs.’

The Samsung U10 pocket HD camcorder will become available in August, with the two SD upscaling camcorders becoming available in September. Prices have yet to be confirmed.
