Highlights including the new Poweshot G11 and S90

Canon has unveiled its Autumn range of Powershot cameras, featuring the latest model in the G-series, the SX20 with its 20x superzoom, the SX120 and the novel Powershot S90.

The most exciting new product is debatably the Canon Powershot G11. The G series of Canons has become incredibly popular with consumers and professionals, and reviews of the G7, G9 and G10 can be read in our digital camera report.

New features of the G11 include an adjustable LCD and a reduced resolution. The resolution of the G10’s sensor measured 14.7Mp, but the G11’s sensor has a resolution of 10Mp.

Reduced resolution

Canon explains that this has resulted in a sensor that is more sensitive to light, so shots can be taken with a higher ISO setting without the graininess that can ruin low-light photography on other compact cameras.

The Canon Powershot S90 has also created quite a stir. It features a rotatable ring situated around the lens that can be set to adjust a number of manual settings. Control of the white balance, the exposure, the ISO and the zoom can all be made with the use of the ring.

The ring can also be set to control the ‘Nostalgia’ scene mode: a mode which causes photographs to appear to ‘age’ by the effective gradual removal of colour and the introduction of graininess to the picture.

Another impressive characteristic of the S90 is its large 2.0 aperture, allowing the user to effectively take shots with a narrow depth of field – a technique particularly handy in taking portrait photography when you may want the background of the image to be blurred.

Canon Powershot SX20 IS and Powershot SX120 IS

The Canon Powershot SX20 IS has also been introduced, featuring a 20x zoom and HD video mode with stereo recording. The SX20 features a 12.1Mp sensor and a 2.5-inch adjustable LCD. It’s the successor to the Powershot SX10, of which there is a full review in our digital camera report.

The fourth of the Canon Powershots to launch this autumn is the Powershot SX120: a compact model featuring 18 scene modes, a 10Mp sensor and a 10x optical zoom.

The SX20 IS and the SX120 IS will both launch this month and retail at around £400 and £230 respectively. The G11 and the S90 are both slated for October launches when they are likely to retail at around £570 and £450.
