Sony has released the Walkman S540 series – its first MP3 music and MP4 video player with built-in stereo speakers.
The S540 is 10.2mm thick, includes two speakers covered by an aluminium speaker grille, and Sony claims that its Digital Linear Phase Speaker System will deliver ‘satisfying sound with solid bass and crystal clear highs’. The S540 has a 2.4-inch LCD screen that offers video playback at 30fps (frames per second).
Sony also claims a battery life of 42 hours for music playback, or 6.5 hours of video when listening through headphones, but this reduces to 17 hours of audio or 5 hours of video when using the speakers. Which? will put these claims to the test when the S540 series is included in its MP3 player reviews.
Which? tech expert Al Warman said: ‘Bus and train passengers probably won’t thank Sony when the S540 starts making its presence heard on public transport.
‘But, by integrating speakers into the MP3 player, Sony has done away with the need for an MP3 player speaker dock or headphones, and if the S540 can live up to its claimed battery life, it could become an ideal portable music and video player for listening to music outdoors.’
The Sony Walkman S540 comes in black, pink, violet and red, and will be available to buy from September 2009, although prices have yet to be confirmed.
