Palm Pre to launch in UK on 16 October

Hotly-anticipated mobile phone exclusive to O2

Palm Pre

O2 has confirmed that it will exclusively launch the hotly-anticipated Palm Pre in the UK on 16 October.

The Palm Pre smartphone was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year and launched in the US this June. O2 has now confirmed a UK launch date of 16 October, and several tariff prices – including a free option on a 24-month contract, and £44.05 or £73.41 options on 18-month contracts.

Palm Pre, exclusive to O2

The Palm Pre has a 3.1-inch touchscreen and a full Qwerty keyboard, but it’s the Palm webOS – the mobile phone’s operating system – and its wireless charging ability that impressed us most when we saw the device at the CES show in Las Vegas.

Wireless charging is available for users who buy the Touchstone charging pad, which O2 will be selling at around £45. If a call is received when the Palm Pre is wirelessly charging, then it will automatically activate the speakerphone function.

Palm webOS

The Palm webOS has several interesting features including the ‘Cards’ feature: a feature that splays the active applications out on the bottom of the screen like a hand of cards. The user can then pick a card, or application, that they want to access.

On the hardware side of things, the Palm Pre has a 3Mp camera, 8GB of on-board memory and a 3.5mm headphone socket.

Mobile phone reviews

Jon Barrow, Which? mobile phone expert, said: ‘It’s exciting that this eagerly awaited phone is finally due to arrive in the UK, as it will serve as a major rival to the Apple iPhone and smartphones from BlackBerry and HTC. Palm has put all it can into the Palm Pre and we expect it to fare well in our lab-based tests’.
