Citroen Metropolis Concept hybrid unveiled

Huge luxury plug-in hybrid will debut in Shanghai

Citroen Metropolis Concept is enormous

Citroen has unveiled the Metropolis Concept – an astonishingly large luxury hybrid saloon that will go on show at the Shanghai World Fair in May.

The Citroen Metropolis Concept is 5.3 metres in length, 2 metres wide and 1.4 metres tall. The vision of Citroen’s international design team – which is based in Shanghai – it seems certain to appeal to its Chinese audience since saloons, especially long-wheelbase saloons, are extremely popular in China.

70g/km CO2 emissions

The Citroen Metropolis is a plug-in hybrid. Power is provided by a combination of 272bhp 2.0-litre petrol V6 and an electric motor.

The electric motor produces 55bhp in most circumstances, but has a maximum peak of 95bhp – somehow giving the Metropolis a combined total power ‘overboost’ output of 460bhp for overtaking. The electric drivetrain also offers the option of four-wheel drive – like Citroen’s (and Peugeot’s) forthcoming HYbrid4 diesel-electric system.

Since the Metropolis is also a plug-in hybrid – meaning the battery for the motor can be charged at a plug, rather than replying on the petrol engine – Citroen claims this enormous, massively powerful car will emit just 70g/km CO2.

Concept styling

But then, the Metropolis is only a concept – and it has the looks to match.

Interior details haven’t yet been released, but the exterior features ‘Silk Pearl’ paint, which changes colour according to the lighting conditions. It also has a ‘kite-style’ grill, active rear spoiler, classic Citroen concave rear window and backlit ‘origami’ floating quarter-lights.

Isn’t origami Japanese? Anyway, something that is definitively Citroen and very French about the Metropolis is its Hydractive suspension – which is sure to provide a very smooth ride.

Production preview?

The Citroen Metropolis Concept is on show in the French Pavilion of the Shanghai World Fair from 1 May to 31 October.

No word on whether Citroen plans to put it into production – but expect more details soon.
